Shakespeare

Two posts in one day, it's a Christmas miracle!!

I found this via Stumble Upon, and I found it to be very interesting. I do love the Bard.

How many words did Shakespeare know?

In his collected writings, Shakespeare used 31,534 different words. 14,376 words appeared only once and 846 were used more than 100 times. Using statistical techniques, it's possible to estimate how many words he knew but didn't use. (http://www-math.cudenver.edu/~wbriggs/qr/shakespeare.html)

This means that in addition the 31,534 words that Shakespeare knew and used, there were approximately 35,000 words that he knew but didn't use. Thus, we can estimate that Shakespeare knew approximately 66,534 words.

According to one estimate, the average speaker of English knows between 10,000-20,000 words. (http://oncampus.richmond.edu/academics/journalism/chal.html)

All this makes me curious. How many words to I know?

Thank you Jason Kottle for your original post that I've shared with my two readers. :)

Almost Forgotten

Oops. I forgot about the Blog. See. I knew this would happen. Wahle is terrible at reminding me. It always sounds like "play!" or "feed me" or, his favorite, "I need to tee-tee."

I didn't go to school today. Major attack of the sinuses and a little bit of the fever. (No cowbell needed) Luckily, I had their vocabulary tests already made out and run-off. Now I get to sit at home and watch Wayne's World.

I'm on the look-out for a new car. My dad and I spent the day in Alexandria last Saturday looking. I test drove a few cars: the Kia Sorento, the Toyota Rav4, and the Ford Edge. Let me say that the Rav4 is a car for midgets. My knees touched the steering wheel, and I had to bend down to see out of the rear view mirror. The Sorento was nice, but. . . I loved the Edge. It was like driving butter. Oh...my...sweet...Jesus. Now I just have to find an Edge that's affordable. Wish me luck.

Ok, now for the pressing news I promised in my first post.

(cue suspenseful music)

I'm moving back to Ruston this summer! There I said it. I decided that I'm going to live in Ruston and commute to Homer. I think it will be better for me. I won't be cooped up in Homer with no friends.

Easter: A fertility celebration

Friday, when I got to Olla, my sister decided to tell me what she learned about Easter. I'm not going to get into all the history even though I admittedly Googled what she told me. She went into great detail about the celebrations of the goddess Eastre and fertility. Maybe, I'm oblivious to things such as the rampant fertility symbol: the eggs. I laughed, I really did when she told me. How could I not have seen that? I mean I love things like that. That just goes to show that "you really do learn something new every day."

First day on the blog.

First day on the blog. I think I can do this. Well, it isn't a matter of cans and can'ts it's more a matter of wills and won'ts.

I decided to start a blog because everyone else is doing it. Yes, I have jumped on the blog bandwagon. Why not, right? I can ride this wagon all the way to Chinatown and back. Or. Something like that. ha.

I don't know what you are supposed to write on these things. I'm sure Heather is the only person who will actually read these ramblings. However, I do know this. I'm a grown-up now. How scary is that!?!? (I don't know if a question mark or an exclamation mark should go there...)

First post down. Down for now. I feel as if I might post again later. I do have some late breaking news. But, Wahle needs to teetee, and that is more pressing business.
